The 2015 Division Outstanding Young Scientist Award is awarded to Jeremy D. Shakun for his key contributions to the quantitative assessments of modern and past climate variability.
Jeremy D. Shakun’s research has addressed quantitative assessments of modern and past climate variability, extending from analysis of instrumental records to regional and global climate changes of the past. His most significant research involved a comprehensive data synthesis, uncertainty analysis, and robust statistical evaluation to establish the relation between regional and global temperature variability during the last deglaciation and its various forcings. This highly original work contributed to several recent landmark papers, most notably his paper published in Nature (2012), which establishes a primary role for CO2 in the global warming of the last deglaciation, and his contributions to the paper published in Science (2013), which provides a long-term (Holocene) context for recent global warming.
He has also made substantial contributions to the analysis of high-resolution climate change in speleothems and an innovative analysis of mechanisms for propagation and translation of interannual climate variability in the tropics into decadal-scale variability at higher latitudes.
Jeremy Shakun’s groundbreaking research, combined with his tremendous potential for future sustained exceptional research make him an worthy recipient of the EGU Climate Division Outstanding Young Scientists Award.
