The 2010 Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) Award is awarded to Elco Luijendijk for the poster/PICO entitled:

The effect of topography driven groundwater flow on deep subsurface temperatures in the Roer Velley Graben (southern Netherlands) (Luijendijk, E.; Person, M.; Van Balen, R.; Ter Voorde, M.; Verweij, H.; Simmelink, E.)

Elco Luijendijk is a PhD student at the faculty of Earth and Life Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focusses on reconstructing the thermal and geological evolution of sedimentary basins using low-temperature thermochronology, and on tracing and numerical modeling of the thermal effects of groundwater flow. The awarded poster shows how data on the freshening of marine sediments was used together with subsurface temperature data to constrain the extent of topography driven groundwater flow in the Roer Valley Graben in the southern Netherlands. Numerical modelling indicates that this flow system can explain thermal anomalies of ~20 ºC in the upper 1 km of the basin, despite a modest topographic relief of 130 m.
