The 2011 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Ayah Lazar for the poster/PICO entitled:

Stability of submesoscale wake vortices in a rotating and stratified shallow-water layer: laboratory experiments (Lazar A.; Stegner A.; Caldeira R.; Viboud S.; Didelle, H.)

Ayah Lazar is a PhD student at the department of geophysics and planetary sciences of the Tel Aviv University in Israel and at the laboratoire de météorologie dynamique of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, France. Advised by Eyal Heifetz and Zvi Ben-Abraham in Tel-Aviv and Alexandre Stegner in Paris. She did her BSc. in Physics and her MSc. in Astrophysics at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Using theoretical, experimental, and observational methods, her research focuses on inertial instabilities in oceanic flow. The parameter space of the instability was mapped with linear normal-growth stability analysis, which is corroborated with experiments on a rotating platform and fully non-linear simulations. Further non-normal growth analysis and field-work on the wake of Madeira Island are planned.
