The 2017 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Katharina Höflich for the poster/PICO entitled:

Towards an improved mechanistic understanding of major saltwater inflows into the Baltic Sea (Höflich, K.; Lehmann, A.; Myrberg, K.)

I am a PhD student at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany. My work focuses on physical oceanography and climate variability of the Baltic Sea system. The PICO presentation is about recent work on improving the mechanistic understanding of major saltwater inflows, whose understanding is critical in understanding the physical, chemical and ecological dynamics in the highly stratified estuarine environment of the Baltic Sea. During my PhD work I also focus on improving the realistic representation of physical processes in an ocean general circulation model by implementing effects from the oceanic surface wave field into the model physics. The use of numerical models is critical in gaining a better understanding of highly complex and variable systems, not only on a global scale but also for the coastal ocean.
