I am a third year PhD student at the Institute of Geophysics and Geology, Leipzig University. My current research focuses on the location of seismic noise sources driven by near-surface processes, such as subterranean fluid movements, gas release or water tremors in the glacial environment. In order to do so, I am using Matched Field Processing (MFP), a beamforming technique that is based on correlating a measured noise field with synthetic forward modelling solutions (Green’s function) over a 3D search grid.
This poster shows the work carried out together with Philippe Roux (ISTerre, Grenoble) as well as with Fabian Walter and Fabian Lindner (ETH Zürich). On the one hand, methodological improvements are presented, that enable the usage of MFP independently from the source mechanism, which is often unknown considering complex environmental processes. On the other hand, the application of MFP on Gornergletscher (Switzerland) shows the location of englacial water tremor sources in the ice, which can be linked to a glacier moulin.
