Journalists, freelance science writers and public information officers may sign up for complimentary media registration. Online registration to the meeting is now closed, but you can still register on-site during the meeting.

Media registration gives access to the Press Centre, including quiet side rooms for interviews, and other meeting rooms. It includes a public transportation ticket for Vienna valid from Monday 8 April until Friday 12 April. Media participants also have access to high-speed Internet (LAN and WLAN) and complimentary breakfast, lunch, coffee and refreshments at the Press Centre.

Please read the requirements below to find out if you are eligible to attend the conference as a media participant.

If you registered online and your registration was approved, your name and affiliation will be listed under Who's coming?. To have access to the Press Centre at the General Assembly, you will have to pick up your badge from the registration area in Hall X5 (Sunday 12:00–20:00, Monday 07:30–18:00, Tuesday-Thursday 08:00–18:30 or Friday morning). Please bring identification and your business or press card (or equivalent) to present at the Austria Center Vienna.

If you haven't registered online, you can attend the conference by registering at the registration area on site. Please check the required documents under the Eligibility section below.

For information on accommodation and travel, please refer to the appropriate sections of the main EGU General Assembly 2019 website.

Carbon offsetting

Since 2018, the EGU gives General Assembly participants the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions resulting from their travel to and from Vienna by contributing to a carbon offsetting scheme when they register to the meeting. In 2019, media participants to the conference will be able to donate to one of three different carbon-offset projects by using the carbon-offsetting terminal on site, which will be located in the main entrance hall of the Austria Center Vienna.

Eligibility for complimentary media registration

The EGU provides complimentary media registration for the express purpose of allowing media participants to gather material to produce media coverage of the EGU General Assembly. If attending the meeting with this aim, the following individuals are eligible for complimentary registration:

Journalists, including freelancers

Press officers and institutional science communicators

Science bloggers

Note that representatives of publishing houses, for-profit corporations, and the business side of news media must register through the main registration website or register at the main registration desk at the conference and pay the appropriate fees. Please note that no exception is made to this rule for editors of scientific journals who write or edit their publications' news sections.

Authors and filmmakers currently working on a book or documentary on Earth, planetary or space sciences aimed at a general audience may also be eligible for media registration. Please contact for more information.

Scientists are not eligible for media registration, with the exception of scientists who are also reporters with traditional media or established science bloggers (see above). They can register as journalists provided they plan on covering the meeting and can submit proof that they have recently written stories for recognised publications or established blogs.

Any participant who registers as media but is also presenting talks or posters at the EGU General Assembly, must first register as a scientific participant for the day(s) they will be presenting.

If you satisfy the eligibility requirements above, you can register on-site during the meeting.

Please note that we are unable to provide letters of invitation for media participants. Participants who need to receive an official letter of invitation to obtain a visa, to raise travel funds or for administrative purposes should register through the main EGU General Assembly 2019 website, paying the appropriate fees, and request a letter of invitation.
