Job description

A position at the Postdoctoral level is available in the Earth Research Institute and Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in the project led by Professor Charles Jones “The Dynamics and variability of the South American low-level jet” (http://clivac.eri.ucsb.edu). The project seeks to understand the mechanisms of low-level jets that form along the eastern Andes Mountains, their diurnal, seasonal and long-term variability. The project also aims to understand how local processes and remote forcings control the occurrence of low-level jets on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains and their impact on precipitation variability.
The selected candidate will develop diagnostic analyses using a variety of data sets including reanalyses, remote-sensing and precipitation datasets. The candidate will also perform numerical experiments with global climate models. Experience with the NCAR CESM model is highly desirable.
The position is a full-time research training under the mentorships of Drs. Charles Jones, Leila Carvalho and Qinghua Ding and offers competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for one year and continuation for another two years will be based on performance and availability of funding. The ideal starting date for the position is September 1, 2020.
Basic qualifications: At a minimum, applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field, except the dissertation (or equivalent) at the time of application.
Additional qualifications: 3 years of PhD experience in analyzing large data sets including model simulations. Appointee should have a minimum 2-year experience working independently and collaboratively within a research team. Ph.D. (or equivalent) at the time of Appointment.
Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated experience in statistical analyses, CESM and/or WRF models, Linux environment and programming skills. Strong written and oral communication skills demonstrated in peer review publications and presentations in professional conferences. Experience with IDL, Python, NCL, Matlab and/or FORTRAN.
